In standardized terminology, the "bio-based" degree of a material is quantified through its bio-based content, which typically refers to the percentage of the material’s mass or carbon content derived from biomass sources. Among these metrics, bio-based carbon content is the most critical and widely used indicator. It measures the proportion of carbon in the product that originates from modern biomass (renewable, plant-based sources) relative to the total carbon present—often termed "new carbon" (in contrast to fossil-derived "old carbon").
